Varieties of Conventional Implicature: Evidence from Japanese
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the linguistic realization of conventional implicatures, taking the semantics and pragmatics of the Japanese adverbials sekkaku and yokumo as a test case. It is shown that their meanings involve an interesting and hitherto unstudied mix of asserted and conventionally implicated content. An extension of Potts’s (2005) LCI logic for supplementary conventional implicatures is proposed which is capable of analyzing objects of mixed conventional implicature and at-issue type, and objects with conventionally implicated meanings which provide the main content of their utterances. The logic is then applied to a range of other constructions and lexical items in several languages, and used to repair an infelicity in the original system.

Christopher Potts, The logic of conventional implicatures (Oxford
Paul Grice warned that 'the nature of conventional implicature needs to be examined before any free use of it, for explanatory purposes, can be indulged in' (1978/1989: 46). Christopher Potts heeds this warning, brilliantly and boldly. Starting with a definition drawn from Grice's few brief remarks on the subject, he distinguishes conventional implicature from other phenomena with which it migh...
متن کاملPure versus Hybrid Expressivism and the Enigma of Conventional Implicature ( penultimate draft )
Conventional implicature is conventional in the sense that it is a function of linguistic meaning and context in the way that truth-conditional content is. Nevertheless, although conventional in this sense it makes no contribution to truth-conditions. Rather it introduces a pragmatic presupposition. The delivery of content in implicature is in the mode of the unsaid. How exactly we should under...
متن کاملComedy, Context and Unsaid Meaning: A Case Study in Conversational Implicature
Pragmatics moves away from the word level and sentence level study of language towards the study of language in real-world context and at discourse level whereby two or more participants take part in conversation. There are moments when the speaker explicitly says something but the listener may have other interpretations and inferences from their statements. The aim of this study was to demonst...
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Sense and Implicature
This thesis is a both a descriptive and theoretical examination of implicatures, parts of the contextual meanings of utterances that are separate from their sense, their main point. The empirical taxonomy I describe draws on the work of Grice (1975), but fleshes out two important subcategories of implicature that he did not discuss in detail. One of these subcategories is the conventional impli...
متن کاملReflections on Jennifer Saul's View of Successful Communication and Conversational Implicature
Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...
